Saturday April 14, 2012 on the High Desert Trail System in Gallup, NM
2013 date TBD
Check out some video of the 2012 Dawn 'til Dusk. This one by John Heine (no the other Heine). And this one, that includes some shots of the Gallup Bike Fest and Townie Crit on Friday before the stormy race, by Chris Miller.
This was another hard year for Dawn 'til Dusk - for our volunteers, our staff, and mostly for the racers. About one hour after the race start, a snowstorm rolled in. The temerature plummeted, winds were gusting, and people were getting hurt. For the best interest of the riders and our volunteers, we called the race. The last lap was completed around 11:30am.
There are a ton-o-tough gals and guys out there! Gallup and Zia Rides sends props to those that had the guts and gumption to show up and race, despite the miserable weather forecast. While we're not entirely sure what changes we'll be making to the venue, race date, trail, etc., in an attempt to both avoid (like the plague) and buffer any future shitty weather, ideas are circulating and we'll update the website with how we're moving forward with Dawn 'til Dusk.
In the meantime, for those super duper folks that drove and/or flew out to Gallup, stayed in hotel rooms, ate in restaurants, and ended up not being able to complete the race, we recognize the expense. Therefore, we are offering you a comped 12-hour or discounted 24-hour race registration credit toward any Zia Rides race for the next two years. So, if you showed up and raced at Dawn 'til Dusk 2012, you can race in any of our 12-hour races for free (this does not include 12 Hours of Old El Paso - while we'd like to take credit for putting on that stellar event, we don't) or, you can register for any 24-hour race we put on for $50, in 2013 or 2014. This is non-transferrable. We don't know exactly how we're going to implement this yet, but we'll be in touch with those racers soon.
For those that were not able to show up to Dawn 'til Dusk, did not spend the bucks on Gallup gas stations, hotels, restaurants, and stores, thank you for registering. We hope you can make it next year.
AS we were reminded again, this race has a reputation for challenging weather. We've cancelled it once in it's 8 year history and that was because of a multiple hour/day deluge. Last year we cut it 2 hours short due to the extreme windchills and snow. This year was a near repeat.
Remember this race didn't get it's slogan from some marketing person sitting in a cube. It EARNED it... Can you endure? posted Wednesday, April 11
This year's Dawn 'til Dusk is the first race in the inaugural Zia Rides Race Series. Although there will be no points awarded for Dawn 'til Dusk this year due to the early termination of the event, it will count toward the requirement of at least 3 races. So if you rode, you only have to ride 2 more races in the series to qualify to win. Join us for a year long celebration of rollin' it on dirt!
The race beneficiary is the Bikemobile of the Boys and Girls Club of Gallup. The Bikemobile is an innovative way to introduce underprivileged kids to bikes while combating youth diabetes, which is a HUGE problem in Gallup and the surrounding areas!
Can you endure?
Pedal, pedal,
The Zia Rides Crew
